Frequently Asked Questions

Making the decision to use cloth nappies doesn’t need to be a difficult one. There is a lot of information available on how ‘best’ to do things when it comes to cloth nappies which is fantastic. But it can become a little overwhelming and deter you from making the switch.

So, let’s take it back to the basics.

How many you need really depends on few key points; how old your baby is and how often you want to wash and how you will be drying them.

If you are wanting to use cloth nappies full time it is recommend to have between 20 – 24. This will allow you to have some in use and some in the wash

Make cloth work for you. Full time, part time just at home or any other combination is completely fine. Just find what best suits you and your baby’s needs.

  • All in One (AIO) – A nappy that doesn’t require assembling – has an insert sewn into the nappy. If a pocket style an additional insert can be added
  • All in Two (AI2) – A nappy that has separate inserts that are snapped into place
  • PUL –
  • Pocket Nappy – A nappy that has separate insets that are placed inside the pocket
  • Boosting – To add additional
  • Double Gusset – An extra
  • Bamboo Charcoal Pocket Cloth Nappy – All this means is that they are a pocket nappy with a bamboo charcoal inner lining.
  • Inserts
  • Microfiber – A synthetic fabric that has a high absorption rate. Place a microfibre on top of the bamboo insert to increase absorbency for heavy wetters or night use
  • Shell
  • Swim Nappy – A waterproof material outer with a mesh inner. These are designed to contain the solids.
  • Wet Bag
  • Disposable Liners – single use thin layer of bamboo BLAH

• Place your pre stuffed mcn at the top of baby’s bottom. Not up at the waist like a disposable.
• Pull the nappy up between bubbas legs. Scrunch in the middle if needed to ensure you get a nice fit in the crease lines. As if wearing jocks.
• Pull the fastening tabs out against bubs hip above the thigh
• Secure the bottom hip snap first then the waist snaps
• Repeat
• You should be able to fit 2 fingers under the nappy at the front. It may gape slightly at the front. This is ok.
• Our bubbas hate muffin tops as much as we do. You don’t want it to be cutting in.
• Ensure there’s no gap around the thighs to help prevent leaks
• If using the rise snaps ensure the material is tucked upward.
• Impression marks are Ok as long as they don’t hurt and they go away quite quickly.
• Snaps can be adjusted asymmetrically if your ocd will allow

When you first receive your nappies we recommend you put them through a normal wash this will ensure any residue for the manufacturer has been removed.

If you have purchased inserts that contain bamboo we recommend soaking them for 24 hours before use to help to ensure an optimal absorbency.

Change bub as usual then separate the insert from the shell and place into a dry pail (aerated bucket)

Place the solids into the toilet as you would or should be doing with a disposable, rinse off any residual poo, separate and place into your dry bucket.

Wet or soiled nappies are stored in a dry bucket. It is no longer recommended to soak nappies.

If you are out and about simply place the wet nappy into a wet bag until you get home.

Soiled cloth nappies shouldn’t be stored for too long and should be washed every ~ 1-3 days.

Use a pre wash cycle (30-40 mins) this will ensure any residue is removed and the main wash is completed in clean water.

Use a full cycle warm wash – no hotter than 60 degrees Celsius. Ensure you have the correct amount of water, detergent and clothing to ensure a good agitation and proper clean.

Do not use fabric softener!

If possible we recommend drying them on the clothes line! If you have to use a dryer just make sure it’s on a low heat setting (less than 60 degrees) this will ensure the waterproof material isn’t damaged.

As pocket nappies come in two separate pieces they dry quickly.

We recommend once your nappies and inserts are dry that you prepare them by placing the inserts in before storage, this makes using them a lot more convenient when you need them.

Simply place the insert into the pocket and adjust the snaps to the correct size. See Fitting Guide.

Our nappies are all One Size Fits Most (OSFM) this means that they can be adjusted to fit from newborn right through to toilet training. Simply adjust the snaps on the front to amend the rise, tummy and hip fit.

Just remember that as your baby grows you will need to adjust the sizing accordingly. We don’t want any muffin tops so ensure you can place two fingers under the nappy right the way around.

You want the legs to fit like undies ensuring the nappy is fitting nicely into the leg creases. This will help to prevent leakages.

Disposable nappies can take over 500 years and will never truly decompose. In fact, the first ever disposable is still in land fill today.

Modern cloth nappies can be reused and rewashed multiple times and can even be used for subsequent babies or can be sold or donated.
